Getting Results: Oxford Circle Woman Slapped With Litter Fine For Home

Posted: Updated:
Oxford Circle -

A spry and orderly great grandmother couldn't believe it when she got a $50 litter fine for her home. She says she's out every day keeping it 'spic and span.'

Connie Hamilton is nearly 88-years old. Her daughter emailed FOX 29 upset that her mom looked at her beautiful English Garden, and got a ticket for not having a litter free home. She thinks it's just not fair.

Hamilton is proud of her family and her home. She raised five kids by herself after her husband died 50 years ago.

Connie is frustrated because she comes out every day to pick up trash when she gets her paper. Plus, once a week she sweeps. Her home is immaculate so she couldn't believe it when the city slapped her with this $50 fine for trash.

“I'd like to see it go away, I don't think it's fair, because I clean every day, every morning I clean whatever is out there,” Hamilton said.

Connie says she can't sweep every minute of the day. She never saw a ticket coming her way despite the note in her mail saying city inspectors had found trash 6 weeks earlier at 8:30 in the morning.

“It seems unlikely to come all the way out here at 8:30 in the morning. If I thought it was legitimate, I wouldn't mind paying, and will pay if I have to pay, but I don't think legitimate. I clean it up every morning,” she said.

Connie plans to fight the ticket but, the court date is the same day her granddaughter is going to have a baby.

We  found the problem when they city emailed us the photos of the trash they found. The photo didn't look like Hamilton's house. The city then sent us the following statement:

We have investigated this issue.  We will reach out to the Office of Administrative Review to rectify this situation. The Streets Department apologizes for this error and inconvenience. This is why we take the photos. It is a quality control mechanism that gives us the ability to establish accuracy of employees and citizens.
