Midsummer Storms Slam Philly Region, Leave Damage Behind

Posted: Updated:

Monday night's storm system packed a dangerous punch. Lighting and heavy rain covered much of the area.

Time-lapse video shows Center City Philadelphia going dark just after 7 p.m. You can see the city almost disappear as the light show in the sky got under way.

Meanwhile, crews across the region are working to repair power outages. PECO said the storm caused power loss to at least 10,000 customers at its peak, most of those in Philadelphia and Bucks County, but crews had the number down to 1,300 by early Tuesday.

In New Jersey, about 3,000 customers were still without power in the early-morning hours. PSE&G reported the most significant outages in Camden County.

In addition to the power outages, the storm caused widespread damage across the region.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce was live Tuesday morning in Voorhees, N.J., with a look at the damage there. There, the storm toppled trees and brought down power lines.

Video from overnight on the 100 block of Blue Ridge Road shows where power lines caught fire, forcing crews to close roads in the area.

Residents living in the nearby Burnt Mill Arms Apartments had to be evacuated. There were no reported injuries.

Many branches and limbs down throughout our viewing area.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell was in West Kensington on Monday night, where we saw some storm damage, too, including a tree that fell onto an SUV near the corner of Sixth and Cambria streets.

City tree crews were kept very busy. Chainsaws were buzzing throughout the neighborhood.

Another big problem was flooded basements. Staff at the Crossroads Community Center on Sixth Street was kept busy through the night bailing out buckets of water from their basement.
