Bergdahl could return to active duty as early as Monday

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who was released from Taliban captivity six weeks ago in a prison swap, is set to return to active duty as early as Monday, military officials confirmed to Fox News.

The announcement comes after Bergdahl completed therapy and counseling after being held by the Taliban for five years as a prisoner of war.

Bergdahl is expected to work at the Army North headquarters at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Five senior Taliban were released from detention at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in exchange for Bergdahl, who had disappeared from his post in Paktika province in eastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. The five Taliban are to remain in Qatar for a year.

Fox News' Justin Fishel and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
