Homeowner speaks after shooting intruder

Posted: Updated:

A homeowner speaks out after he shot and killed an intruder at his home in southwest Atlanta Monday morning.

The shooting happened at about 7:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Connell Avenue.

Dan Scoggins is still on edge, but doesn't regret killing his intruder.

"I pulled the gun out and shot him," said Scoggins. He says he stood face to face with the man who attempted to get in the back door at his house and says he had no choice but to defend his property and his wife.

Police tell FOX 5 this is the same house that was burglarized over the weekend while the homeowner was inside.

Scoggins showed FOX 5 a knife that he believes could be the man's weapon. He says he found it near his back door and that the incident happened in a matter of seconds.

"That whole time from the time I walked out the back door to the time I killed him was five seconds," said Scoggins.

Meantime, Atlanta Police are still investigating the shooting. Scoggins hopes investigators will find the killing justifiable.

"The nerves from the shooting is probably more so than the nerves from the police," said Scoggins.

Police say there were no eyewitnesses except the homeowner.
