A 16-year-old Plainfield boy was killed early Sunday when he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 55 near southwest suburban Shorewood.

The boy was walking northbound on the interstate near mile marker 253 when he was struck by a passenger vehicle, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:05 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office. His name was not being released Sunday afternoon.

About 12:30 p.m., police were still investigating the cause of the crash and where the boy was on the road when he was struck, Illinois State Police Joliet District Sgt. Brad Sprague said. No charges had been filed Sunday afternoon.
