Police: Man turned to burglary to pay for college

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Naperville-area man who told authorities he turned to burglary to help finance his college education is free on bond and awaiting trial, after he allegedly broke into two vehicles not far from his home, the Naperville Sun is reporting.

Bret B. Hruby, 24, of the 10600 block of Burnham Court, faces trial in Will County Circuit Court in Joliet on two felony charges of burglary. The alleged break-ins occurred in the Tamarack Fairways area of unincorporated Will County near Naperville’s far southwest side, where Hruby lives.

Kathy Hoffmeyer, spokeswoman for Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas, said deputies were sent about 1:12 a.m. July 2 to a house on the 10000 block of Wentworth Drive, where they met with a man who was detaining Hruby.

The man told the deputies “he and his girlfriend observed Hruby inside (the man’s) vehicle” and watched as he got out, carrying a pair of baseball pants, Hoffmeyer said Friday via email. “The victim then confronted Hruby and detained him until police arrived,” she said.

Deputies, while speaking with Hruby, found a tube cutter and a water faucet cap, Hoffmeyer said. Hruby, at that point, allegedly “made statements regarding another vehicle burglary he had committed earlier on Royal Porthcawl Drive,” she said.

The locations of both alleged break-ins are not far to the east of Hruby’s home.

Hoffmeyer added Hruby “stated that he was finding items to sell to pay for college.”

An examination of court documents indicated Hruby has no criminal record in Will, DuPage and Kane counties. He is free on $3,000 bond, and a preliminary court hearing date of July 23 has been set in the matter.
