ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A teenager seen driving a stolen car Friday led police on a chase for about a mile through northwest suburban Elgin, jumped out of the car while it was still driving — causing the driverless car to crash into a parked truck — and then escaped on foot before finally being apprehended several blocks away.

Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said someone who lives in the 500 block of Mill Street reported Friday morning that his Honda Accord had been stolen, the Courier News report.

About 12:30 p.m. an officer on patrol spotted the car driving at Chicago and Jackson streets and tried to get its driver to pull over. But the driver refused to stop, leading the officer on a pursuit at what Theriault said were relatively low speeds through the northwest side.

As they were driving southbound along North Commonwealth Avenue north of Lawrence Avenue, the officer reported, the driver jumped out of the Honda and ran off, leaving the car still moving. The driverless car drifted into the oncoming lane and struck a parked pickup truck head-on, causing major damage to the Honda and some damage to the pickup.

Theriault said the suspect fled on foot while the officer was making sure that no one had been hurt in the crash. But several officers started searching for the driver and set up a perimeter around an area where a passersby said they had seen him run, in the area of Lawrence Street and State Street. The driver finally was found hiding in some weeds in a vacant lot near the northwest corner of State and Lawrence about 15 minutes after the crash and he was taken into custody.

He was found to be a 17-year-old boy. Investigators discovered that the Honda’s ignition had been pulled out of the car’s dashboard.

No one was injured, Theriault said.

The youth was charged late Friday with two counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and two counts of fleeing and eluding police. He was taken to the Kane County Youth Home pending a court hearing.
