A NC man starts 'Hot Car Challenge'

Posted: Updated:

A North Carolina man is fed up and taking on an issue that has had a ripple effect nationally.

Terry Williams of Greensboro put a video on social media illustrating the danger of leaving children in hot cars. He challenged others to experience what it feels like to be stuck in a car with no ventilation during hot temperatures. He shot the video of himself in Raleigh, NC, on a day when the temperature was about 90 degrees.

“I'm sitting in the car with the windows rolled up cause I want to know how it feels to be left in the car,” said Williams. “But I would never leave my kids in the car like this.”

In recent weeks, there have been multiple cases of children who died after being left in a hot car. In Georgia, 22-month-old Cooper Harris was left in his father's SUV all day. According to CNN, weather experts estimated that temperatures climbed to about 140 degrees inside that car.

In Lancaster, SC a 3-year-old died after being left in a hot car for 4 hours; the cause of death was heat stroke. In this instance, the child managed to get outside without his mother knowing it. He and the family's dog got trapped inside. The dog also died from extreme heat.

Child safety expert Janice Williams told My FOX Carolinas 15 children have died so far this summer from being left in a hot car.

“Some parents intentionally leave their kids in the car because they are running a quick errand,” said Janice. “Too often, however, parents misjudge how long errands take. It only takes 10-20 minutes for a car to heat up to deadly temperatures.” She said biologically, children are in more danger in the heat than adults.

“I can barely breathe out here,” Williams continues as he drips in sweat back in Raleigh. “But my system is stronger than these little kids systems.”

“Don’t be the next fool to end up on the news,” said Williams, “talking about you left your kids in the backseat. This is not a game, this is serious.”

Terry Williams’ YouTube video has been viewed close to 7,000 times and is spreading quickly across social media platforms. People are now taking the challenge themselves and posting it to his Facebook page.
