Zion man pleads guilty to murdering 5-month-old boy

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Zion man pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Tuesday in the death of his former girlfriend’s 5-month-old baby, the Lake County News-Sun reports.

In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to a 35-year sentencing cap for Demetries Thorpe, 26.

On July 1, Judge Daniel Shanes told Thorpe and his defense attorneys that they had one week to accept or reject a plea offer. If the plea deal wasn’t accepted by Tuesday, July 8, a trial date would have been set.

Thorpe had pleaded not guilty to suffocating 5-month-old Joshua Summeries and then disposing of the body in a garbage Dumpster.

He was arrested and charged on Aug. 24 of last year. Thorpe has remained in the custody of the Lake County Jail.
