Soldier receives renovated home; surprised by show of support

PEORIA, Ariz. -

A member of the Armed Forces recovering from injuries in Afghanistan received a real homecoming -- a newly remodeled home!

He and his family are grateful for the outpouring of support.

It was a poignant arrival for USMC Lance Corporal Eduardo Fuentes at the newly remodeled home in Peoria.

It was donated to him as a thank you for his service to our country.

"I feel amazing.. I still cannot believe this," said Fuentes.

"I still can't believe.. you can pinch me.. maybe.. I'm really happy," said Eduardo's wife, Maria Fuentes.

Emotional moments -- Eduardo was injured when a grenade struck him and shrapnel remains in his head and legs.

"She had to go over to Walter Reed and I was semi-conscious," he said.

Now in appreciation, the group Building Homes for Heroes has donated a home to the family.

The recovering soldier was surprised by the makeover and upgrades.

"Oh no, I wasn't expecting this.. this is beyond what I was thinking about.. I was just thinking, a small house for my small family. This is insane," he said.

The family is grateful to local businesses that donated materials and worked on the home.

"It's amazing to be a part of gifting a mortgage-free home to a family like this," said Building Homes for Heroes' Chad Gottlieb.

There's even a new air conditioning unit and a pool to help the family stay cool this summer.

"..maybe I'll start crying whenever you guys leave.. right now, I'm just trying to hold my tears," said Eduardo.

Plenty of volunteers came out to express appreciation to this service member for his sacrifice to our country.

"It's awesome to get this kind of support when I come home. This is really like a field of love and for people to say, you know what, good job, we want to take care of you," said Captain James Byler, who was injured in Afghanistan.

Money was raised through donations and sponsorships.
