Study suggests psychedelic mushrooms could treat depression, anxiety

Posted: Updated:

When we think of psychedelic mushrooms songs of the 1960s come to mind. and so do hippies swaying and dancing without a care in the world.

However a recent British study found that so called 'magic shrooms' may have permanent positive effects on the human brain and could be used to treat disorders like anxiety and depression.

In the study, 15 healthy participants received injections of psilocybin, the ingredient that gives shrooms their psychedelic punch. Brain scans revealed the drug's effects were similar to a brain in dream sleep.

Dr. Ezriel Kornel, who did not participate in the study, says the psilocybin reduces the activity the part of the brain that brings out anxiety. While the study's results are preliminary, Dr. Kornel says they are promising because researchers found that the good experiences stayed with the subjects for weeks or months.
