Detroit Tigers visit Veteran's Hospital for a little home run derby action

Posted: Updated:
CITY OF DETROIT - A few Detroit Tigers earned a few stripes for doing a good thing on Thursday in Detroit.  Pitchers Phil Coke, Ian Krol and Chad Smith stopped by the John Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Detroit to play some virtual baseball.

The three fireballers were joined by Tigers' announcer Mario Impemba.  The point of the visit was to pay respect to those who serve.

No small thing considering all the news lately about how jacked-up some of the VA Hospital systems are in this country.  It's nice to hear a good story coming from the VA.

The players handed out autographs and played Home Run Derby on Wii Baseball.

Coke failed to hit a virtual dinger but he hit a home run when he offered this sentiment: "These are the real heroes," referring to the veterans who served this country and paid a heavy price with injuries to the body, mind and soul.

Good job to all involved with this effort to boost spirits.
