Storms cause A Capitol Fourth concert dress rehearsal to be closed to the public

Posted: Updated:

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks was one of many acts who hit the stage Thursday night for the final dress rehearsal before Friday night's A Capitol Fourth concert.

Sparks, Frankie Valli, Patti LaBelle are among the performers set to take the stage here for the July 4th event.

There was supposed to be rehearsals all day, but they were cut short because of the weather. Just past 4 p.m., the first wave of storms approached and Capitol Police evacuated the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, telling those who gathered for the rehearsal to seek shelter.

Officials monitored the weather reports and eventually made the call. The Thursday night run-through would go on, but would be closed to the public as a safety precaution.

This would be disappointing to many because a lot of people like to come to the dress rehearsal instead of the actual event to beat the rush and avoid the crowds.

VIP ticketholders were permitted in and even though the gates were closed to everyone else, some people tried to make the best of it and gathered outside the fences along 3rd Street to watch from a distance.

Organizers say the Fourth of July events are still scheduled to go on as planned. The entrances along 3rd Street are set to open at 3 p.m. and all visitors will be screened.

There is a list of prohibited items, including pets and bicycles.

Capitol Police say plan accordingly, check the weather reports and advise people to take mass transit to the Capitol grounds.

A Capitol Fourth will begin at 8 p.m. Friday. The fireworks are also still scheduled on National Mall. Both events are free and weather-permitting.
