Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued until 9 pm for DC area

Another humid day in our area is bringing another round of storms and showers this afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. Thursday for the D.C. region.

In addition to the watch, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through late tonight. The National Weather Service warns the thunderstorms may bring heavy rainfall and flash flooding may occur.


SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING UPDATES:

5:16 p.m . - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for western Charles County in southern Maryland and King George County in central Virginia until 6 p.m. At 5:14 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 22 miles southwest of La Plata to 23 miles southwest of La Plata and were moving northeast at 25 mph. This line of storms is capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

5:03 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for eastern Howard County in central Maryland, southern Baltimore County in northern Maryland, northern Anne Arundel County in central Maryland, Baltimore City in northern Maryland until 5:45 p.m. At 5 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was detected near Elkridge and was moving northeast at 25 mph. This storm is capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph.

4:30 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the District of Columbia, southeastern Montgomery County in central Maryland, Howard County in central Maryland, southeastern Arlington County in northern Virginia, northern Prince George's County in central Maryland, northwestern Anne Arundel County in central Maryland until 5:30 p.m. At 4:26 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from Rockville to Fort Totten to 9 miles southwest of Crystal City and were moving northeast at 25 mph. This line of storms is capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph.

4:13 p.m. - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 4:45 p.m. for the city of Alexandria, the city of Fairfax, the city of Falls Church, Fairfax, Arlington and Montgomery counties and the District of Columbia. At 4:12 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from Great Falls to Mantua and were moving northeast at 25 mph. These storms are capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph.

4:12 p.m. - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 4:30 p.m. for Culpeper and Orange counties. At 4:07 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 9 miles southwest of Warrenton to 8 miles southeast of Culpeper and were moving northeast at 35 mph. These storms are capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This is a dangerous line of storms. If you are in its path, prepare immediately for damaging wind gusts and frequent cloud to ground lightning. Move indoors to a sturdy building and stay away from windows.

4:08 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southeastern Fauquier County in northern Virginia, southern Fairfax County in northern Virginia, southern Prince William County in northern Virginia, northern Stafford County in northern Virginia until 5 p.m. At 4:02 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 15 miles west of Dale City to 14 miles west of Triangle and were moving northeast at 35 mph. This line of storms is capable of producing hail up to the size of half dollars and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

4:04 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for eastern Carroll County in north central Maryland, northwestern Baltimore County in northern Maryland until 5 p.m. At 4:02 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was detected 6 miles west of Gamber or 9 miles south of Westminster and was moving northeast at 30 mph. This storm is capable of producing hail up to the size of half dollars and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

3:56 p.m. - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 4:15 p.m. for Carroll and Frederick counties in Maryland. At 3:53 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was detected near Mount Airy or 10 miles northeast of Damascus and was moving northeast at 25 mph. This storm is capable of producing hail up to the size of ping pong balls and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm has a history of producing golf ball sized hail in Mount Airy.

3:55 p.m. - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 4:30 p.m. for Madison, Culpeper, Rappahannock and Orange counties in Virginia. At 3:53 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 7 miles northwest of Culpeper to Orange and were moving northeast at 25 mph. These storms are capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

3:50 p.m. - The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the District of Columbia, southern Montgomery County in central Maryland, southeastern Loudoun County in northern Virginia, city of Falls Church in northern Virginia, city of Fairfax in northern Virginia, Arlington County in northern Virginia, city of Alexandria in northern Virginia, Fairfax County in northern Virginia until 4:45 p.m. At 3:48 p.m., severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from south riding to 7 miles west of Burke and were moving northeast at 25 mph. This line of storms is capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
