Fewer new cases of HIV and AIDS in DC

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON - A new report by the D.C. Government finds there are fewer new cases of HIV and AIDS and fewer deaths.

The study finds there were 680 new reported cases in 2012 which is down from 722 in 2011 and 1,100 in 2008.

In 2012, just over 200 HIV positive people died compared to 345 in 2008.

Fewer of those cases were related to problems with the disease.

There are more than 1,600 D.C. Residents living with the disease, so it remains an epidemic.

Worldwide, it affects roughly 2.5 percent of the population.
