Middletown fires transgender officer

Posted: Updated:

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Middletown's mayor has fired a transgender police officer who had complained of discrimination.

The Middletown Press reports Mayor Daniel Drew sent a letter of termination to 47-year-old Francesca Quaranta last week. In it, he said Quaranta had failed a fitness for duty evaluation and refused to participate in another.

He said the termination was administrative and not disciplinary.

The 47-year-old Quaranta has a complaint pending before the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunity, alleging harassment. Among other things, she says she was forced to remove her earrings even though female officers have been allowed to wear them, and was not allowed to wear a wig.

An investigation by the city last year found no evidence of discrimination.

Quaranta did not immediately messages left Monday seeking comment.
