Vietnam Vet Says He lost His Job For Giving Corn Muffin To 'Needy Man'

Posted: Updated:
Venice, Fla.-A 73-year-old Vietnam veteran says he was fired from a Cracker Barrel restaurant after giving a corn muffin to a man he thought looked homeless.

Joe Koblenzer was working his shift at a Cracker Barrel in Venice, Florida, when a man walked in and asked if he could have some condiments.

Koblenzer says he loaded a few packets into a bag and added a corn muffin as well.

"He looked a little needy. He asked if I could get him some mayonnaise and a little tartar sauce because he said he was going to cook a fish," said Koblenzer.

Shortly after, Koblenzer says he was let go from his job.

"The general manager said to me, 'bad news for you, Joe, we're going to have to let you go,” said Koblenzer. "It's a rule. They can legally do this because I did break the rule."

Koblenzer says he is proud of what he did.

An online campaign against the chain quickly spread through social media. Facebook users took the opportunity to express their distaste for Cracker Barrel's decision to fire Koblenzer.
