Police: 'door flipping' on the rise in Marietta

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Ga. -

Marietta police are warning about a rise in “door flipping.”

Police say criminals walk through parking lots and simply flip door handles, to see which ones are unlocked.

“They’ll go through and flip the handles of cars and see if they’re unlocked and obviously if they’re unlocked it’s easy access,” said Officer David Baldwin with the Marietta Police Department.

Officer Baldwin says cell phones, wallets, purses, laptops and even weapons have been stolen by door flippers in increasing numbers since the summer season got underway.

Police say deterring the crime is very easy, but also easy to overlook so always lock your doors.

Marietta police tell FOX 5 the spike in door flippers and car break-ins isn’t limited to their city alone. They say it is a trend they’re noticing throughout metro Atlanta.
