35 dogs rescued from Butts Co. puppy mill

Posted: Updated:

More than 30 dogs from a puppy mill in Butts County are now in the care of Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary.

Workers spent Thursday grooming the animals, but they still have a long way to go.

“I have never seen animals in this bad of shape, I have never seen this many that were so neglected,” said Jama Hedgecoth with Noah’s Ark.

The animals were discovered after Sheriff’s deputies went to a home on an unrelated call. When they arrived they found the neglected dogs in cages.

Animal control took over and charged Marianna Lord and Todd Porterfield with multiple charges of animal cruelty and failure to immunize.

“Several of them are going to have to have their teeth taken out,” said Hedgecoth.

Hedgecoth says it will be a few months before the dogs will be ready for adoption.

The Butt’s County district attorney is also looking at the possibility of more charges for Lord and Porterfield.

Noah’s Ark says the care of the dogs will be expensive and they are taking donations.
