Charlie Bothuell with mother after interviews with police and CPS

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The missing 12-year-old boy who was found alive in his family's basement has been released from medical care and is said to be with his biological mother.

"Charlie's fine. He's back with his family where he needs to be," says Alice Shippings, Charlie's grandmother.

Saying very little on her way out, she confirmed Charlie Bothuell V, who was missing for 11 days and then discovered in the family's basement area, is back home with his biological mother.

He was released from Children's Hospital Thursday morning. Physically we're told he is okay; emotionally may be another issue.

"He's alive, and he just got this little deal to go through but he's with his grandmother and mother and his auntie in that house, and I think he's going to do fine," says Charles George, a family friend.

Child Protective Services released the 12-year-old to his mother and Fox 2 has learned right now Charlie Bothuell IV is not allowed to see his son after it has been revealed he is facing allegations of child abuse.

His son was interviewed by psychiatrists and investigators.

Inside the family's townhouse police found traces of blood in his room and on his clothes, and a PVC pipe the father admitted he used to discipline his son was taken as evidence.

Charlie denied those allegations to us on Wednesday.

"It's only "evidence" if there was some crime committed. No crime committed here - that's not what happened," he said.

Twelve-year-old Charlie was missing for 11 days and while police were conducting a search warrant on the house as part of a possible homicide investigation they discovered the boy behind a makeshift barricade.

The barricade was in the service tunnel of the basement outside the downstairs door of the family's townhome. The boy told investigators he was down there for the entire 11 days, even while cadaver dogs searched the premises. Maintenance crews tell us that could not be possible.

"We come out, we close the door, we lock it and set the alarms. There's no way they can go in or out," says maintenance worker Walter Abercrobie.

And police agree, so was someone helping him?

Young Charlie told investigators it was his stepmother who fed him and helped him hide. Was it to protect him from his father's alleged abuse, or did the father know his son was down there the entire time.? That's what investigators are still working to find out.

Fox 2's Taryn Asher reports investigators are also testing the blood found in the townhome to see if it belongs to the other two children that lived in the house, young Charlie's half-brother and half-sister.

Police plan to submit a warrant on Saturday and charges are expected to be filed against the father and stepmother, Asher has been told.

Asher reports, after speaking with Charlie's grandmother, that she was told there was no sort of in-court custody agreement between Charlie's biological mother and father, that rather the living situation was something they agreed upon themselves. Charlie, according to the father, is said to have been going through a tough time and went to live with his father about a year ago because he had to "get him into shape."
