Opera singer recovering after heart surgery

(WJBK) -  For his whole life he focused on his voice, but suddenly he forgot all about that as doctors said his heart needed to be repaired.

The 55-year-old opera singer was hitting all the right notes until he started feeling strange.

"For about two months I was feeling a burning sensation in my chest anytime I went outside in the snow or running up and down stairs," he recalls.

Turns out Ed was walking around with four blocked arteries, which could been fatal.
 
"The man held my heart in his hand and I feel like I owe my life to him," Ed says.

Beaumont cardiologist Phil Robinson performed a quadruple bypass on Ed, rerouting his blood through new passages. Ed's case was extreme but what caused his crisis is way too common.
 
"The risk factors are diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, inactivity," says Robinson.
 
Now, at the June 5th Tigers game, the big moment has arrived. For the first time since his April surgery Ed is singing in front of a huge audience.
 
Even though he's got a lifetime of recovery, his voice is as big as ever. While Ed has performed for presidents and at sold-out Carnegie Hall, for him and his family this is the performance of a lifetime.

Ed's feeling about 85 percent healed. Next, he plans to make a return to Carnegie Hall. Right now he's in cardiac rehab and focusing on his new health life which includes eating the right foods and exercises.
