Tanker rollover closes I-17 northbound

Posted: Updated:
NEW RIVER, Ariz. - A tanker rolled over on I-17 northbound, just before Table Mesa Road, causing a huge back up on the freeway. I-17 NB is expected to be closed for much of Thursday.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says they believe two semis were driving northbound when one started to veer over and over-corrected to avoid hitting the second one. The maneuver caused the tanker to roll onto its side.

Graves says the driver suffered minor injuries.

Hazmat crews are on scene cleaning up at least 1,000 gallons of oil that spilled out of the tanker.

I-17 is closed at New River Road. DPS is working on turning people around and getting them on another route.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the road will likely be closed most of Thursday.

Alternate Route: SR 87 through Payson or SR 89 through Prescott.

Through Prescott: US 60 from the Phoenix area to Wickenburg, where drivers will turn onto US 93 until reaching State Route 89. Once taking SR 89 into Prescott, drivers can take SR 69 to Dewey, and then SR 169 to return to I-17.

Through Payson: SR 87 from the Mesa or Fountain Hills area. About 20 miles north of Payson, drivers will turn northwest on SR 260 to return to I-17 in Camp Verde.

Drivers should expect extra traffic on either of these alternate routes because of the closure.
