ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Flood waters are reaching peak levels on two major rivers in the Twin Cities.

MINNESOTA RIVER

The Minnesota River hit its high water mark in the southern suburbs on Wednesday night.

In Chaska, the river reached its third-highest level ever but still short of the record spring flooding in 1965. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has an official posted at the road block on Highway 41 to keep people away from the current after someone went around the barricades in 2001. The body was never found.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER

The Mississippi River in St. Paul is expected to crest Thursday. The river is about to reach 20.5 feet, the seventh-highest level in the last 100 years, Craig Schmidt, a hydrologist at the National Weather Service in Chanhassen said. The record crest in St. Paul was set in April 1965 at 26 feet. Many roads and parks including Harriet Island are already under water and Mayor Chris Coleman has declared a state of emergency in the city.

In St. Paul, the Mississippi River is flowing faster than Niagara Falls at night, according to the Ramsey County Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
