Queens teen helps raise money for animals in need

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Marshall Nisselbaum, 13, handed over hundreds of dollars to people he's never even met before Wednesday, all in the name of helping animals. He had the idea to help local shelters earlier this year and turned to the Trylon Vet Care Center in Forest Hills, Queens.

Practice manager Karla Wallach helped set up a Facebook page to spread the word. She says donations came in via social media from around the country.

Marshall did his part by soliciting donations the old-fashioned way: asking around school and synagogue and hanging fliers. And he decided to donate some of the money he got at his bar mitzvah in May. In all, he collected more than $2,000. Sponsors Purina and Hills kicked in food and supplies.

Viktoria Sonorjai's rescue Posh Pets is one of five benefiting from Marshall's efforts. Karen Sturm's Fur Babies is another.

Marshall's efforts will help hundreds of pets, like Fuego, all across our area. And he says he's not done yet. He wants to continue raising money for the cause.
