Chief Craig shares details of finding 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  Authorities discovered 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell, who had been missing for nearly two weeks, in the basement of his family's home Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier, during a news conference with Chief Craig, authorities said this case appeared to be more than a serious missing case and were not ruling out the possibility of a homicide based on some physical and circumstantial evidence.

Then, around 4:30 p.m. during another search of the home, Charlie was discovered in the basement.

"You know why I'm smiling? We have Charlie. I talked to Charlie. I put my arms around Charlie, and Charlie's in - he's with us. So, we found him," says Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "We have conducted several searches in this location and, I will tell you, in one instance we had cadaver dogs go into the location."

When asked if he thought the boy had been in the basement all along or had been someone else and then returned to the location, Chief Craig responded, "That's a very strong possibility but we're not certain."

Charlie was found hiding behind a barrier or sorts made up of a barrel and some boxes.

His father arrived home shortly after taping a segment for a national cable show and was greeted by the cameras.

"No, I didn't know that he was in the basement. I searched. My wife searched. We've had dozens of police officers, FBI agents here, dogs. We've all been searching for my son. You know, so, any intimation that I knew he was in there somehow is absurd," says Charlie Bothuell IV.

But Chief Craig says it doesn't appear the child could've built the barrier himself.

The father bristled at the suggest his wife and Charlie's stepmother, Monique, may have been hiding the child.

"That is absurd," he says.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old Charlie is receiving any medical care that he may need. Chief Craig said the boy was hungry but it appeared some food was behind the barrier where he was found.

Chief Craig said he couldn't know if the boy had been a victim of any abuse.

The father says he will see Charlie Thursday.
