Fishermen Off The Cape May Coast Encounter Great White Shark

Posted: Updated:
CAPE MAY, N.J. -

A great white shark made a surprise appearance alongside a boat off the coast of Cape May.

A team of fisherman were on their 35 ft. vessel on Saturday, June 21st, floating near the World War II shipwreck known as the "28-Mile Wreck," when the shark emerged from the water.

The 16 ft. great white swam right up to the boat. The team admired the beauty of the amazing creature. However, then the shark started to get a little too close for comfort.

The shark swam around for about 20 minutes before it showed signs of being hungry. The shark then completely ripped off the team’s chum basket of fish from the side of the boat and tried to take a bite of the outboard engine.

Fox 29’s Chris O’Connell found out that the shark sighting is keeping some beachgoers out of the water.

It was 39 years ago this summer, when the movie Jaws had us all asking ‘Is it safe to go back into the water?’

Juvin Pejman says no.

He's on vacation in New Jersey from Arizona.

However, once he saw the video of a great white shark chomping on a chum bag just 20 miles from where his kids were playing, the dad of 4 said the ocean is now off limits.

"I’ve seen dolphin swimming 20-30 feet out there. Sharks can absolutely come in here, but it's just like anything it's a game of odds; you can get struck by lightning you can get eaten by shark,” said Pejman.

Marine biologists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say seeing a great white shark is actually a good thing. Increasing numbers is critical for the top of the food chain predators to control other marine populations.

Some who visited Cape May didn’t let a shark sighting ruin their vacation.

"I think it's scary, but I think you are out in the water it's your own risk it's kind of on you,” said tourist Makenzie Lysek. "They usually don't bite usually it's a mistake if they do I think"
