DETROIT (WJBK) - A foul odor in a neighborhood on Detroit's east side leads to a disgusting discovery. Seventy-five cats, some living, some dead, were found inside a home on Casino.

People in the neighborhood feared the odor was a body. It was, but not human. Detroit police responded. In all, 40 dead cats and 35 living cats were removed from the house.

"I think it's really really crazy. I think it's ridiculous," said one neighbor. "I have made calls about it but nothing has been done."

Large piles of feces were found along the floors. A dog also ran from the house. Neighbors say the woman who lives there lives alone and volunteers her time helping to rescue cats. That information was confirmed by another animal rescue group, Hopeful Heart Animal Rescue. Melanie Wittner works with the group and says she was heartbroken as she surveyed the scene.

"This is disgusting," Wittner told Fox 2. "This house should probably be condemned. It's a health issue at this point."

While animal cruelty charges are a possibility, no agencies could confirm if this homeowner was charged with anything. Melanie Wittner describes how a person who wants to help rescue animals could get to the point where they're living with so many cats.

"They just get overwhelmed. They don't know when to say no. They don't know when to set limits," Wittner said.

UPDATE: Members of the animal rescue community returned to the home Monday and say they recovered even more dead animals, possibly up to 100 in total. Click here to read more.
