'Soar and Dance' studio teaches more than just dance

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Dance studios are as much a staple of New York as gyms and bagel shops. They’re everywhere. But one dance studio in Long Island is taking things to a whole new level.
Soar and Dance is located in Lawrence, right on Central ave. The studio boasts professional instructors for traditional dance like street jazz, hip hop, ballet, lyrical, salsa, ballroom and even Zumba, but they also offer something else that has quite a few people talking.
The SOAR is an acronym for 'School of Aerial Recreation.'
“We offer the same stuff you see in Cirque du Soleil” said Kaitlyn Burgoon the owner of Soar and Dance. “They learn basic silks and lyra. Circus is the new workout fad like yoga and Pilates have been in the past.”
She says the thing that sets aerial circus apart from other workouts is that it is truly an art, much like its 'cousin' dance.
“It's not just something you do, it is something you create. It takes heart and mind to perform and invent the choreography.”
She says kids do it because it is "cool" and adults do it to get a "workout" but its true nature is the art of learning what the cast member of Cirque du Soleil does and how they do it.
“My current clients have become obsessed. They watch videos, pick out songs to choreograph” she said.
“I've called circus an art but it is also a lifestyle, not just a hobby.”
