GOP DECISION DAY - 2:00 p.m. House Republican start to turn the page today after defeated Rep. Eric Cantor announced his resignation. Rep. Kevin McCarthy seems likely to inherit the House Republican leadership job. Challenging McCarthy in a long-shot bid was second-term Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho. Fighting to replace McCarthy are Reps. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, leader of an organization of House conservatives; Peter Roskam of Illinois, McCarthy's deputy whip; and Marlin Stutzman of Indiana.

MEDAL OF HONOR - 2:15 p.m. President Barack Obama is presenting the Medal of Honor to a veteran who took the blow from a grenade to protect a fellow Marine in Afghanistan, sustaining major wounds, including the loss of his right eye. Retired Cpl. William "Kyle" Carpenter will receive the medal during a ceremony Thursday in the East Room of the White House. He's the eighth living recipient to be chosen for the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

FBI VIRGINIA LAWMAKER PROBE - The Justice Department has launched an investigation into the surprise resignation of Democrat VA State Sen. Phillip P. Puckett, from Russell County. Puckett a Democrat stepped down, sinking Gov Terry McCauliffe's efforts to get Medicaid expansion put in the state budget. Puckett quit for a job on the Republican controlled tobacco commission while his daughter was waiting for Republicans to approve her judicial appointment in Southwest Virginia. A grand Jury is supposed to be convened next week, so far though the FBI won't comment on the interviews it's been conducting.

GAS TAX PROPOSED - Two senators are pushing a bipartisan bill to raise federal gas taxes which would be for the first time in nearly 20 years. It's being sold as an idea to help pay for highway and transportation programs. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, and Republican Bob Corker idea would be to raise would raise the 18.4 c gas tax and by 12 cents over 2 years. It eventually would sit at 30c and then after that the taxes would be indexed to rise to keep up with inflation. The increase would be applied in two increments of 6 cents each.
