City Council wants Albany to reduce NYC speed limit

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

In October, on Prospect Park West in Park Slope, 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Ekstein ran for his soccer ball and got run over by a van that some witnesses believe was speeding. Sammy died. The driver did not get even a ticket. His mother, Amy Cohen, began crusading to lower the speed limit in New York City.

She was at City Hall Wednesday when the City Council, by a vote of 38 to 2, voted to support a state Senate bill that would allow the city to lower the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph unless otherwise posted.

Ydanis Rodriquez, the head of the council's Transportation Committee and supporter of the mayor's Vision Zero driving initiative to reduce traffic deaths, says you have a better chance of surviving being hit by a car going 25 instead of 30.

In order for the 25mph speed limit to become a requirement in New York City, it must be signed into law this week before the end of this year's New York legislative session. So far two key elected officials have been slow to support it: Republican Sen. Dean Skelos and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

A spokesman for Skelos says he is still "taking a look."

Cuomo, who is running for reelection, would have to sign the bill to make 25 mph speed limit the law in New York City, a law that could potentially be unpopular with drivers. His office did not respond in time for this report.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
