Woman dies in car crash after gunshots fired

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Police are on the scene of a serious accident on Detroit's east side which has resulted in the death of one person and several other people being taken to the hospital.

Shontae Beauford was on her way to the park, walking on Whithorn near Gunston, when she says all of a sudden she heard gunshots and saw chaos heading straight toward her.

"She was going really fast and she lost control. She hit a few cars and then just stopped and ran into that one," Beauford says.

Witnesses say the woman behind the wheel of the blue minivan was driving to get away from a hail of gunfire. But in her attempt to get away she smashed into a tan Cadillac parked with four people inside. The force of the crash pushed the car up against the tree and into an abandoned house.

"The lady that was in the car, she's really bad. You know, they said that she was folded under her dashboard. The seat broke and she was up under the dashboard folded," says Beauford.

Police say that driver did not make it. Others are will survive with what's being described as minor injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the gunshots fired but can confirm no one was struck by any bullets.

"I think she was just running for her life. She was really scared. She's got two kids," says Beauford.

That driver of the vehicle, we're told, is a woman who is around 30 years old and that money and marijuana were found inside her vehicle. We do not know at this point who was trying to shoot at her.

Again, police are still investigating the circumstances around this.

Also, we do not know why four people were sitting in that parked Cadillac right there on the side of the road when we're told they live right around the corner.
