Oral arguments set in Michigan gay marriage case

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -- Oral arguments have been officially scheduled by a federal appeals court about Michigan's dispute over gay marriage.

A court filing Monday says that arguments are planned for Aug. 6 before a three-judge panel at the Cincinnati-based court. The filing notes, however, that the arguments could be canceled if the judges decide briefs and the court record are enough for a decision.

More than 300 same-sex couples were married in March after a Detroit federal judge said Michigan's 2004 voter-approved ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.

In Oakland County alone, 142 gay marriage licenses were issued and 82 weddings took place.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals earlier suspended the decision while the appeal is pending.
