The Fitz File: June 17, 2014

Posted: Updated:
. - Today is Tuesday, June 17, the 168th day of 2014. There are 197 days left in the year.

US FORCES TO IRAQ - The White House last night sent a letter to congress under the War Powers Act. The letter officially notified Congress of 275 US Military Forces being positioned in Iraq to help secure U.S. assets. President Obama held a National Security meeting last night to consider a range of options for combating fast-moving Islamic ISIS group. These are including airstrikes or a special forces. The U.S. and Iran also held an initial discussion on how the longtime 35 year enemies may work together to ease the threat from the al-Qaida-linked militants sweeping through Iraq.

CAPITOL ENCLOSURE? - Should the US Capitol complex be fenced off and cut off for traffic? That's the suggestion of former Senate Sargent at Arms Terrance Gainer. Gainer is proposing an end to the open campus at the Capitol. Instead he is proposing a fence around Capitol Square, similar to the fence around the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. He would start blocking through traffic along Constitution and Independence avenues. Car bombs are the concern. The Capitol Police Board has studied similar proposals.

VIRGINIA GOP DEFENDS MARRIAGE BAN - The Governor and Attorney General won't defend Virginia's gay marriage ban, but Virginia's House Republicans are ready to. Republicans have introduced legislation that would allow Speaker William J. Howell to hire lawyers to defend Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban in a federal case that is likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court this year. Attorney General Mark R. Herring announced in January that he would not defend the 2006 amendment to the state Constitution that defines marriage as between a man and a woman because he found the law to be in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

FDA SALT CRACKDOWN - The Government is about to tell you how much salt you can have. Food companies and restaurants could soon face government pressure to make their foods less salty - a long-awaited federal effort to try to prevent thousands of deaths resulting from heart disease and stroke. The Food and Drug Administration is preparing to send out voluntary guidelines demanding the food makers to drop sodium levels. FDA Is considering a daily range between 1,300 milligrams the American Heart Association recommends and the 3,400 milligrams the average person eats a day.

Today's History:

In 1775, the Revolutionary War Battle of Bunker Hill resulted in a costly victory for the British, who suffered heavy losses.

In 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor aboard the French ship Isere.

In 1994, after leading police on a slow-speed chase on California freeways, O.J. Simpson was arrested and charged with murders of his ex-wife, Nicole and Ronald Goldman. (Simpson was later acquitted in a criminal trial, but held liable in a civil trial.)
