An 87-year old man who was attacked in broad daylight and robbed in Arlington on Saturday continues to heal from his injuries.

Police arrested 57-year-old Melvin Baxter of Capitol Heights, Md. He has been charged with robbery. The attack happened at about 4:50 p.m.

Police say the 87-year-old victim was walking in the 3800 block of N. 9th Street when Baxter grabbed him by the neck, threw him to the ground and then held down while he took his wallet.

A witness who didn't want to be identified tells FOX 5 they saw Baxter getting up and then hurriedly walking away with the victim's cash.

The witness says they made a note of what Baxter was wearing and how he looked as they called police. According to the witness, the elderly man was bloodied and had a cut on his elbow from the fall. They say the man told them he was okay. Medics treated the victim on the scene for minor injuries.

Baxter tried to get away on Metro, but thanks to the description the witness gave police, he was caught on the platform of the Ballston Metro station and arrested about ten minutes after the attack.

Neighbors are stunned by the attack on a defenseless elderly man and angry at the 57-year-old alleged attacker. They say they will be taking more precautions.

Daniel Smith, who has lived in the neighborhood for ten years, says, "Myself and my wife, we walk from the Metro to our house on a daily basis, and we have an elderly home here and it's sad to think they're at risk."

Melvin Baxter is being held without bond.

The victim is expected to make a full recovery.
