Construction causing food trucks in Rosslyn to relocate

Posted: Updated:

Food truck owners in downtown Rosslyn are being served up some heartburn. A skyscraper going up near the Rosslyn Metro station may force the food trucks to relocate from an area where they have set up shop for years.

If you want lunch in Rosslyn, French chef Sabri Uzun is ready to serve. He serves out a food cart, but his competition has been disappearing.

"There's so much construction, the food trucks cannot park,” he told us.

Skyscrapers are squeezing out lunch on the go. Not all that long ago, this stretch of Lynn Street in Rosslyn was lined with nearly a dozen food trucks, but that was before this construction.

It's not much to see now, but before too long, this work site will become a gleaming new high-rise apartment called Central Place.

The Chitti Chitti Grill's Dennis Gelman said for a restaurant on wheels, reduced parking means reduced business.

"It's been tough,” he said. “We pay our taxes and everything. We're licensed her to sell in Rosslyn and now we can't park.”

Rosslyn’s hungry workers said they would like some space set aside for the trucks.

"It's a good value for the folks that work in the area,” said one worker.

"We want them because they're quite good,” said another.

Sit-down restaurants are unlikely to complain. But Rosslyn’s business improvement district said they are working on a solution to "find the space they need during the construction."

Uzun is trying to look on the bright side.

"I’ve got less competition at least!” he said.

For others, it is hard to swallow that construction will last until 2017.
