Wheaton teen dies in apparent drowning

Posted: Updated:
A 14-year-old girl was swimming and apparently drowned, despite efforts from a lifeguard and neighbor who tried to help her.

Rather than celebrate this father's day, a Wheaton family is mourning after a 14-year-old girl apparently drowned at an apartment complex pool.

“I was here with my family, we heard a couple screams so when i came here the boy tried to help her,” said neighbor Elmer Mancanares.

Mario Monroy, is another neighbor, he was enjoying the sunny Sunday afternoon at the pool, when he says a girl, who wasn't a strong swimmer, unexpectedly slipped under the rope from the shallow end into the deep end. “A small child actually spotted her and told the lifeguard, the lifeguard immediately jumped in and following, as he jumped in I jumped in after words,” said Monroy.

The lifeguard and Monroy got the girl out of the water and gave her CPR, “We got the AED, but when we tried the AED it wasn't working. The girl had no pulse, so…” said Monroy.

“I saw her mother she came out from that building over there, she was crying,” Mancanares told FOX 5.

The tragedy weighed heavily on everyone in the community.

“The fact that you're there and not being able to do anything, it's just frustrating,” said Monroy.

The girl who has not been identified yet was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where she pronounced dead.
