Local watering holes were packed on Saturday evening for the match between Italy and England and the nation's capitol led the ratings with the most viewers on opening day.
Crowds overflowed from The Queen Vic British pub, onto the street as England and Italy faced off in round one of hte World Cup.
"I've just been enjoying the game from the door," said one fan who couldn't get in, because the place was packed to capacity.
The anticipated match between England and Italy, even inspired fans to play football in the street and sparked a friendly rivalry between two appropriately themed neighboring bars. The owners of The Queen Vic and Vendetta also decided to place a little wager.
"They're an Italian bar, Vendetta and our bet is if Italy wins I'll pour peroni for a week," said Ryan Gordon, owner of The Queen Vic.
"If England wins we'll pour Newcastle for a week," explained Blair Zervos, owner of the Italian bar next door, Vendetta.
And it's not just the bars that are cashing in on the World Cup. DC topped the rating chart too, nationwide Washington was the city with the most viewers on opening day.
"We love it we have a lot of fun and we're glad to see everyone out," said Zervos.
In the end Italy took the victory 2 to 1.
