Update: On Sunday afternoon around 11:30, the Potomac River search for the missing kayaker was called off. The boater was located alive and well in Reston, Va. The kayaker told police he bailed out of the kayak, swam to shore, and went home. Montgomery County Fire PIO Pete Piringer tweeted that the person responsible for the search was "oblivious to the fact we were looking for him."
Officials are still trying to account for a kayaker who went missing near Great Falls.
Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says officials searched Saturday for the boater from about 8:30 a.m. to noon before suspending their search. It will resume Sunday.
Piringer says officials began looking for the boater Friday afternoon after a person reported a kayaker in distress. A kayak and paddles were retrieved from the river about an hour later. But the boater was not found. Piringer says no one saw the kayaker go into the water.
After heavy rains in recent days, Piringer says the Potomac River waters are high, and the current is very strong.
