Construction worker trapped after trench collapses

Posted: Updated:

Rescue crews are working to pull out a construction worker trapped in a trench in Falls Church.

The worker was working in the 18-foot trench in front of a home located in the 7400 block of Venice Street when it collapsed on him and trapped him up to his chest at one point. Progress has been made and he is trapped about knee-deep as of 11 p.m. Thursday.

However, the mud, dirt and water caused by the recent storms have made the rescue effort difficult and the worker has remained trapped since around 3 p.m.

Authorities have placed air bags, pieces of plywood and a trench box to try to stabilize the ground around him in order to help get him out.

The worker is conscious and alert, authorities say.
