Saying NO: But how? We'll ask an expert!

Posted: Updated:
If the road to hell is paved with good intentions... then I am officially on it.

A good friend's mother passed away more than a month ago.  I meant to send in a donation, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Family birthday gifts - perpetually late.

And I can't even count the number of times I said I'd try to make it to a lunch or a charity event, knowing in my head that it just wasn't going to happen - but not having the heart to send my honest regrets.

My children have come to accept that "We'll see" actually means "No way, but I just don't want to argue about it right now."

I know I have been big on talk and short on action, and I want to change that.
So recently I vowed to myself that I would try harder at doing what I say.

That hasn't exactly been a great solution, as I find myself now obligated to more things than I really have time or desire for. (school parties, civic symposium, field trips, play dates, book clubs, Girl Scout projects – you get the picture)
Perhaps I should have tried the alternate path: less talk. Why is saying no so hard?

It's possible I just need more practice. Neuropsychologist Dr. Richard Cytowic says there are hidden forces at work in our brains - and we can learn to override them.

"Once you understand what factors lead you to say yes more often than you’d like, you will be prepared to say no and take control of a more satisfying life," he writes in his new book Prepare to Say No: mastering the art of personal choice.

He'll be our guest on FOX 5 News Morning this coming Sunday, June 15.  I have so much to ask him!

Send us your questions on saying no and decision making, then join us for the discussion starting at 8 a.m.  Click here to post them on my FOX 5 DC & MyFoxDC Facebook page!

Bethesda has been named the second snobbiest small city in America. But here at FOX 5, we love Bethesda, so we had to hit the streets to meet some of the people there to find out if it’s true.
