A Prince William County high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave after she is alleged of having inappropriate relations with a student.

We are told by sources that Linda Burke and a male student she had been tutoring were caught inside the school by a custodian, who called police. This was on Monday after graduation, but the student was not a senior.

According to sources and court records, Burke, an ESOL teacher at Potomac High School, is facing a felony assault charge and a misdemeanor obstruction of justice charge for allegedly attacking the Virginia State Trooper who came to school Wednesday to arrest her. So far as we can tell, Burke has not been charged with a crime involving the student.

Prince William County police say they asked state police to investigate the case when they realized Burke is married to a Prince William County police detective.

On Thursday, Potomac High School's principal sent an email to parents of students in Burke's ESOL classes letting them know what has happened.

Burke is from Manassas and was released from custody without having to post bond.

Letter sent to parents from the principal of Potomac High School:

Dear Potomac High School Parents and Guardians:

In the interest of open communication with our community, I am writing to alert you that ESOL Teacher, Ms. Linda Burke, is currently on administrative leave pending investigation and resolution of a legal matter.

While confidentiality rules prevent me from sharing additional details, you should be aware that the investigation involves an allegation of inappropriate contact with a student, as well an alleged assault on a police officer. Virginia State Police are leading the investigation.

Despite Ms. Burke's absence, please rest assured that appropriate, qualified substitutes are in place to address student needs for the remainder of the school year.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,

Michael Wright
Principal
