'Remarkable' Redskins fan gets dream meeting with RGIII

ASHBURN, Va. -

Wednesday marked the final Redskins organized team activity open to the media. But the best story of the day took place off the field with an inspiring Redskins fan.

“This is a story about why we do what we do as athletes,” said Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. “It’s for people that we don’t know are watching. The story she told me was remarkable.”

“I’ve been carrying around this letter for about a year now in case I bump into him somewhere and don’t really have time to really thank him for everything,” said Kate. “I got to give him that letter today.”

Kate Dunn has been through a lot to meet her hero.

She attended the Redskins Draft Day Party at Fedex Field. After waiting six hours in the rain, she missed her chance to deliver her letter to Griffin. But Kate tweeted her story to the star quarterback and he invited her to Redskins Park.

“This is a dream come true,” she said. “I’ve been praying for this and dreaming about this for a really long time now. The moment came and I started crying.”

“Great for her to meet him at last,” said Amanda Dunn, Kate’s mother. “Tell him how much he’s meant to her in her darkest moments.”

Her darkest moments came after seven concussions and neurosurgery to correct a brain malformation. She played football until she suffered a right knee injury. It’s the same knee Griffin injured in 2013.

Kate plans on becoming an NFL head coach and Griffin's example has been her driving force.

Kate said, “The message that he spreads -- go catch your dream. When they say you’ll never be the same, prove them you’ll be better.”

“The story she told me behind the letter and behind her life is remarkable,” said Griffin.

Kate is the youngest female USA Football-certified tackle coach. She is interning with Georgetown football as well as the D.C. Divas.

It should come as no surprise she hopes to attend Baylor University just like Griffin.
