Person killed in shooting in Southeast DC neighborhood

WASHINGTON -

A young man was killed after gunfire rang out in a Southeast D.C. neighborhood where a number of D.C. police officers live.

“It's pretty quiet and peaceful, so this is unusual,” said Ray Williams.

He arrived home to the scene as part of his neighborhood was roped off with crime tape.

Police were called out around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to Bruce Place. It turns out shots were fired across a stretch of a couple of blocks. It began near a playground and detectives marked off one bullet hole near the window of a home.

Apparently, the victim took off running and was shot multiple times as he cut through an alley.

When first responders arrived, he was found lying just outside the home of a police officer. He later died at the hospital.

Neighbors say the area is popular among police officers from several jurisdictions including D.C. They estimate that dozens live in the development.

“A lot of them live around here,” said Williams. "Back and forth, when they're not working, they are here washing their cars. It seems to be very protected because the officers are around here quite often.”

Police have not released a motive, but sources tell FOX 5 that this may have stemmed from an attempted robbery, which led to an altercation.

There is no word yet on any suspect lookout information.
