Cardinal to travel to New Orleans for conference

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Later this week, Cardinal Francis George will attend his last U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops spring meeting in New Orleans.

The Cardinal's doctors approved the trip because he finished chemotherapy about five weeks ago.

The trip will take place Monday through Friday. Once he returns to Chicago, his doctors plan on running additional tests to determine future treatment.

This is the Cardinal's third time battling cancer. The 77-year-old leader was hospitalized earlier this year and his doctors advised him to skip a trip to Rome last month for the canonizations of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II.

The Archdiocese of Chicago says a successor to ailing Cardinal Francis George should be chosen this fall.
