No one injured in Hazel Crest home explosion

HAZEL CREST, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An explosion that destroyed a south suburban Hazel Crest house shook nearby homes and woke neighbors early Sunday morning, the Southtown Star is reporting.

“I thought a tree had fallen on my house because it was so loud,” said Joyce Ellis, 58, who lives less than a block from the demolished home.

Neighbors said they heard a loud boom at about 2:30 a.m. A home located at the corner of Orchard Ridge Avenue and 169th Street was leveled.

The house was empty when the blast happened.

An elderly woman who had lived at the destroyed home moved out about a month ago to live with her husband in an assisted-living community, said neighbor Rachelle Snyder, 44.

Snyder said a call from a friend in the neighborhood, and not the explosion itself, woke her that morning.

Debris, including a large chunk of what appeared to be siding, landed on a house next door. That house was evacuated until officials can determine if it is safe for the residents to return.

One resident, who was awake for the first blast, said he also could hear what sounded like the house collapsing a short time later.

No injuries were reported. Officials have yet to release a cause for the explosion.
