NWS warns of dangerous swimming conditions at beaches

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazard alert throughout the city Saturday night, noting dangerous swimming conditions in Lake Michigan. The warning is in effect through late Sunday.

Waves are expected to be 3 to 6 feet high with strong currents, the weather service said. High waves are capable of making even a strong swimmer tire quickly, the weather service added.

Waves will have structural and rip currents, which can sweep a person into deeper water, the weather service said.

Exposed beaches are more likely to experience turbulent wave and current impacts, the weather service said.
