CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man has been charged with shooting two police officers during a traffic stop late Friday on the South Side.

Malik Shabazz, 29, of the 9300 block of South Wallace Street, was charged with five counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting, police said in a statement.

The incident occurred about 11:20 p.m on June 6 when two officers, members of a gang enforcement unit, pulled over a vehicle for a traffic stop in the 9300 block of South Wallace Street, police said at the time. As officers approached the vehicle, someone inside began firing shots, striking them both, police said.

One officer, a 38-year-old man, was shot in the knee, while the other officer, 31, was shot in the vest, police said at the time. The officers returned gunfire, shooting a woman who was driving the vehicle once in the left shoulder and the man multiple times, officials said.

Both officers were “fine” and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said. The bullet did not go through the officer’s vest, and he was later released.

The woman suffered a graze wound, was treated at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park and was later released into police custody, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said at the time.

Shabazz “remains hospitalized” but is scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday, police said.
