Witness helps save woman set on fire

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - "She was just sitting on my bed in a blaze."

He didn't want his identity revealed but a witness is willing share his story - an unbelievable story that happened less than 12 hours before this interview. What he saw and what he had to do is hard to comprehend.

"I had to put her out with the covers," the witness says.

It all took place at an upstairs apartment on Canton Street.

We're told the 40-year-old victim and her 59-year-old boyfriend got into an awful argument.

The boyfriend apparently left, went to a nearby gas station and came back clutching a container of gasoline.

"He was trying to light her and I was trying to push his hand back, and then I slid one time and he caught her. So, once he caught her, he just jumped up, he's like, 'I'm going to jail for the rest of my life!' and he ran out," the witness says.

Within seconds she was covered in flames.

It all happened so fast - and this guy acted fast.

He grabbed the comforter off his bed and wrapped her with it.

"Once I put her out she was still screaming and she was crawling around," he says.

You can see the char marks on this carpet.

The victim was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital where we are told she is covered with second- and third-degree burns.

Meanwhile, her boyfriend remains in custody.

Those who know her are praying she will live through this.

"I couldn't believe it. The only thing I could say was, well, I can't say that on camera," the witness says.

The victim remains at the hospital with burns over 50 percent of her body. Investigators tell FOX 2's Robin Murdoch they plan to send a report to the prosecutor's office sometime on Saturday to determine exactly what charges will be filed in the case.
