The Fitz File: Friday, June 6

Posted: Updated:

Today is Friday, June 6, the 157th day of 2014. There are 208 days left in the year.

D-DAY ANNIVERSARY - President Obama is with U.S. Allies this morning to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.  In all, 19 world leaders, more than 1,000 veterans and many others gathered to honor the troops and civilians who fell in mighty battles that helped bring Europe peace and unity.   At 6:30 a.m., the moment when Allied troops first waded ashore, a U.S. military band played taps. D-Day veterans from the 29th Infantry Division and serving soldiers stood at attention.

VA DEATHS SCANDAL - The new acting Secretary of the Veterans Affairs Department is tackling the most disturbing aspect of the care scandal in the VA right away: the deaths of Veterans. Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson says that an additional 18 veterans whose names were kept off an official electronic Veterans Affairs appointment list have died.  Gibson says he would ask the inspector general to investigate those deaths. Virginia Senator Mark Warner says he's got legislation to let veterans be reimbursed by VA if they seek out care in civilian facilities.

SAVE THE FESTIVAL - The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is one of the most popular events on the national mall. Now a grassroots group claims that grass is the reason the Festival may be ousted from its spot between the Washington Monument and Capitol. "Save the Festival" members say changes at the National Park Service have resulted in restrictions on how the Mall can be used by groups and events that will make future Festivals impossible to stage there. For 47 years the event has been on the mall.

MARYLAND DETAINEES - Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski called on President Obama to work to free 2 Maryland resident who are being heldoverseas.  The Senator says the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl raised big questions for U.S. efforts to bring those men home.  In a letter Obama, Milkulski says the same effort that went into to Bergdahl's release are not being equally applied to civil servants and contractors. One of those men, Alan Gross, has been captive in Cuba since 2009. Warren Weinstein, has been detained in Pakistan since 2011.  Both are from Montgomery County.

Today's History:

In 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, on "D-Day," beginning the liberation of German-occupied western Europe during World War II.

In 1968, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, a day after he was shot by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan.

In 1978, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 13, a primary ballot initiative calling for major cuts in property taxes.

Today's Quote:

"Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely" - Gen. Dwight Eisenhower

Fruit packaged by the Wawona Packing Company out of Cutler, California and sold at stores across the country is being voluntarily recalled. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says there is a possibility the recalled products may be contaminated with listeria. No illnesses have been linked to the recall. Certain lots of peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots sold at Trader Joe's, Costco, Sam's Club and Fresh Direct could be contaminated with the dangerous food-borne pathogen.
