Fairfax approves plan to convert former prison into condos, townhomes

LAUREL HILL, Va. – Lawmakers have approved a plan to convert a former prison into a mixed use development that will include office space, retail space and homes.

Fairfax County has given the go-ahead for the project that will preserve and reuse the buildings on the former grounds of Lorton Prison.

The grounds will be converted into 412 apartments, condos, townhomes and single family homes. It will also include retail and office space, and 20,000 square feet in community space.

The project will begin in the fall of 2014 and is expected to be completed by 2020.
